25 Money Saving Tips for Drivers in 2026

Running a car costs the average UK household over £380 a month. These 25 tips could help you cut that figure without changing the way you live.

Fuel and Driving

1. Drive smoothly

Harsh braking and fast acceleration burn fuel. Use engine braking when you slow down. Anticipate the road ahead. Smooth driving can cut fuel use by up to 20%.

2. Check fuel prices before you fill up

Prices can vary by 10p or more per litre within the same town. Use PetrolPrices.com or the GOV.UK fuel price tool to find the cheapest pump near you. Over a year, that could save over £150.

3. Use supermarket fuel

Supermarket fuel meets the same British Standard as branded fuel. It is often 5 to 8p cheaper per litre. Your engine will not know the difference.

4. Remove roof racks and boxes when you are not using them

A roof box at motorway speed adds roughly 10 to 15% to your fuel consumption. If it is empty, take it off.

5. Keep your tyres at the right pressure

Under-inflated tyres increase fuel use and wear out faster. Check them every couple of weeks. The correct pressures are on a sticker inside the driver's door or in your handbook.

6. Cut unnecessary short journeys

A cold engine uses much more fuel in the first couple of miles. If you can walk or cycle a short trip, your car (and your wallet) will thank you.

7. Stick to 60 on the motorway

Every 10mph above 60 uses roughly 10 to 15% more fuel. Cruising at 60 to 65mph instead of 80mph makes a real difference over a full tank.

Insurance and Tax

8. Get quotes 21 days before your renewal

Research shows that 15 to 24 days before your policy starts is the sweet spot for the lowest prices. Do not leave it to the last minute, and do not just accept your renewal quote. Compare car insurance quotes via Brumble to see what is available.

9. Pay annually if you can

Monthly car insurance payments typically include 15 to 20% interest. If you can afford to pay the full year up front, you will save a significant amount.

10. Check your job title wording

How you describe your job can affect your premium. A "chef" and a "kitchen worker" might get different quotes for the same cover. Be honest, but try different accurate descriptions of what you do.

11. Consider a higher voluntary excess

If you could afford to pay more towards a claim, setting a higher voluntary excess lowers your premium. Just make sure you could actually cover it if you needed to.

12. Pay road tax annually

Paying monthly by direct debit costs more than paying for the full year in one go. The surcharge is small, but it adds up over time. You can check your car's exact tax band with the free Brumble Tax Checker.

Maintenance and MOT

13. Look for MOT deals online

Many garages run half-price or discounted MOTs, especially mid-week. Search online before booking. You can check when your MOT is due for free with the Brumble MOT Checker.

14. Source spare parts from eBay or Facebook Marketplace

Dealership parts can cost three to four times more than the same part from a breakers yard or online seller. For non-safety items like wing mirrors, trim pieces, and interior parts, used is often just as good.

15. Buy part-worn tyres from a reputable dealer

Part-worn tyres can cost 50% less than new. They must legally have at least 2mm of tread when sold. Check the sidewalls for damage and only buy from a dealer you trust.

16. Book your MOT and service together

Most garages offer a package deal when you combine an MOT with a service. It saves on labour costs because the mechanic already has the car on the ramp.

17. Learn basic maintenance yourself

Changing wiper blades, replacing bulbs, and topping up fluids are simple jobs you can do at home. A YouTube video and ten minutes could save you £30 to £50 in garage labour each time.

Did you know?

Lighting faults are the most common reason cars fail their MOT, accounting for 24% of all failures. Checking your bulbs before your test takes two minutes and could save you a retest fee. Source: Brumble analysis of DVSA data, 2024.

Electric Vehicles

18. Charge at night on an off-peak tariff

Off-peak electricity can be half the price of daytime rates. If you charge your EV overnight on a specialist tariff, you could save hundreds of pounds a year compared to charging during the day.

19. Find free public charging points

There are over 1,800 free charging points across the UK, often at supermarkets, car parks, and hotels. Use Zap-Map to find them near you.

Lifestyle and Alternatives

20. Share rides for your regular commute

Splitting fuel and parking costs with one other person halves your daily spend. If you drive the same route as a colleague, it is worth asking.

21. Review your commute

Is there a park and ride near your workplace? Could you cycle part of the way? Even switching to public transport two days a week can cut your fuel bill significantly.

22. Think about whether you really need two cars

If your household has two cars, do the maths. Insurance, tax, MOT, fuel, and maintenance on a second car can easily add up to £3,000 a year. If you could manage with one car and occasional temporary insurance when you need a second vehicle, the savings are substantial.

23. Use apps to find cheaper parking

Parkopedia and similar apps show you the cheapest car parks in your area. Overpaying for parking by even £2 a day adds up to over £500 a year.

Planning and Tools

24. Downsize to a cheaper car to insure

Insurance groups range from 1 (cheapest) to 50 (most expensive). Moving from a group 20 car to a group 8 car could cut your premium significantly. Check insurance groups before you buy your next car.

If you are thinking of selling, you can get a free valuation via Brumble's partner Motorway.

25. Plan your full car budget

Most people underestimate what their car actually costs. When you add up insurance, fuel, tax, MOT, finance repayments, parking, and maintenance, the real number is often a surprise.

The free Brumble Budget Planner breaks down every cost so you can see the full picture and find where to save.

The bottom line

You do not need to make all 25 changes at once. Pick the three or four that apply to you and start there. Even small savings add up quickly when you are spending £380 a month on transport.
