What makes up the price of a litre of petrol?

A big chunk of what you pay at the pump is tax. Here's how a typical litre of unleaded petrol breaks down at today's national average of 161.5p per litre.

52.95p(33%)

Fuel duty has been frozen at 52.95p per litre since the temporary 5p cut in March 2022, with extensions announced in subsequent Budgets. VAT is charged at 20% on the total price including duty. The wholesale cost of fuel is driven by global oil prices, exchange rates, and refining costs.

How can I save money on fuel?

Small changes to where you fill up and how you drive can add up over a year. Six practical tips that make a real difference.

1

Fill up at supermarkets

Supermarket forecourts are typically 2-3p per litre cheaper than branded stations. Use the tool above to compare prices near you.

2

Avoid motorway services

Motorway service stations are consistently the most expensive places to buy fuel. Plan ahead and fill up before joining the motorway.

3

Drive smoothly

Harsh acceleration and heavy braking use more fuel. Keeping a steady speed and reading the road ahead could make a noticeable difference to how often you fill up.

4

Check your tyre pressure

Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and fuel consumption. Check pressures at least once a month.

5

Remove unnecessary weight

Every extra kilogram uses more fuel. Clear out the boot and remove roof racks or boxes when not in use.

6

Compare your car insurance too

Fuel is just one part of your motoring costs. Comparing your car insurance could save you hundreds.
