Enter your registration, answer a few questions about your car's condition, mileage, and service history, and upload photos of your vehicle. The whole process, including photos, takes as little as 30 minutes.

2

Dealers Bid on Your Car

8,000+ verified dealers across the UK compete to give you the best price. Most sellers receive multiple bids, often within hours of listing.

3

Get Paid & Collected

Payment is sent to your bank account before your car leaves the driveway. Collection is arranged by the dealer at a time that suits you, with no trips to forecourts.

Where Should You Sell Your Car?

There are four main ways to sell a car in the UK. Each suits different situations depending on whether you want the best price, the fastest sale, or the least hassle.

Online Car Marketplace

Best for: Best price with minimal effort

  • Dealers compete to buy your car, pushing the price up
  • Free to list, no sale no fee
  • Car collected from your home
  • Typically 2 to 7 days from listing to payment

Part Exchange at a Dealer

Best for: Convenience when buying your next car

  • Trade your old car against a new purchase
  • Quickest route but typically the lowest price
  • Limited to one dealer's valuation
  • Saves time if you are already buying from the dealer

Private Sale

Best for: Maximum control over the price

  • Advertise and manage viewings yourself
  • Potential for the highest price but takes the most time
  • You handle all paperwork, test drives, and payment
  • Risk of no-shows and time wasters

Scrap or Salvage

Best for: Cars that are not roadworthy or economical to repair

  • Quick disposal of non-running or damaged vehicles
  • Price based on scrap metal value and salvageable parts
  • Authorised treatment facility handles DVLA notification
  • Environmentally responsible disposal

The UK Used Car Market

The UK used car market is one of the largest in Europe, with nearly 8 million vehicles changing hands every year. Whether you are selling a petrol hatchback, a diesel SUV, or an electric car, demand remains strong. Brumble analysis of the latest SMMT data reveals the key trends shaping the market in 2025.

The Shift to Electric

While petrol and diesel still dominate the used car market at nearly 90% of all sales, the shift towards electric and hybrid vehicles is accelerating. Used battery electric car sales surged 45.7% in 2025 to a record 274,815 transactions, and nearly one in ten used cars sold is now electrified. For sellers, this means growing demand for used EVs, often at competitive prices. If you own an electric or hybrid car, now is a strong time to sell.

UK's top 5 most popular used cars, 2024 vs 2025. The Ford Fiesta remains number one despite production ending in 2023. Brumble analysis of SMMT used car market data.

Brumble analysis of SMMT data shows the UK used car market has grown for three consecutive years, reaching 7.8 million transactions in 2025. The Ford Fiesta remains the most popular used car despite production ending in 2023, with over 303,000 changing hands in 2025. Petrol cars still account for over half of all used sales, but electric vehicles are the fastest-growing segment, with used EV transactions surging 45.7% year on year. If you are thinking of selling, demand is strong across all fuel types and body styles.

How Much Is Your Car Worth?

Your car's value is shaped by a combination of factors that every dealer weighs when making a bid. Understanding these helps you set realistic expectations and take steps to maximise what you receive.

Because 8,000+ dealers compete on Motorway, you see real market pricing rather than a single dealer's lowball offer. 84% of Motorway sellers achieve above the market guide price. The best way to find out what your specific car is worth is to get a free valuation. It takes as little as 30 minutes and there's no obligation.

Get a Free Valuation

Age & Registration

Newer cars hold their value better. A newer registration plate commands a premium even if mileage is similar to an older model.

Mileage

Lower mileage means less wear and typically a higher valuation. Dealers look closely at whether mileage is proportionate to the car's age.

Condition

Bodywork scratches, dents, interior wear, and mechanical issues all reduce value. A car in genuinely good condition will attract stronger bids.

Service History

A full stamped service history from a franchised dealer is the gold standard. Even a partial history is much better than none.

Number of Previous Owners

Fewer owners generally means more confidence for buyers. A one-owner car with full history is highly desirable.

Make, Model & Colour

Popular makes and models have deeper dealer networks and resell faster. Neutral colours (silver, white, black, grey) tend to attract stronger demand.

Insurance Write-Off Category

Category S and N write-offs can still be sold but will achieve a significantly lower price. Always disclose this honestly. Motorway checks HPI data.

Location

Your location affects which dealers can cost-effectively collect. Major cities and well-connected areas typically attract more bids.

Tips to Get the Best Price

A few simple steps before you list can meaningfully increase the bids you receive from dealers.

1

Get a fresh MOT if under 3 months remain

A new MOT with no advisories signals a well-maintained car to dealers and supports a stronger asking price.

2

Gather your full service history

Locate every stamp, receipt, and service record you have. A complete history can add hundreds of pounds to your valuation.

3

Take quality photos

Motorway will guide you through taking photos from every angle. Good, well-lit images in daylight make a significant difference to the bids you receive.

4

Clean the car inside and out

A clean car photographs better and signals care to dealers. A professional valet is worth the investment before you profile.

5

Be honest about the condition

Motorway verifies condition at collection. Overstating your car's condition leads to reductions or cancellations, so honesty upfront leads to better outcomes.

6

Consider timing

Spring and summer tend to generate more buyer activity for most car types. Convertibles sell best in spring; 4x4s and SUVs peak in autumn.

7

Check whether settling finance first makes sense

If you have a small amount left to pay, settling it yourself before listing may give you a cleaner position. Motorway can handle this for you either way.

What You Need to Do When Selling Your Car

There are a few important steps to complete when selling your car, whether you sell privately, to a dealer, or via an online marketplace.

1

Get your V5C ready

You need the vehicle registration certificate (V5C or logbook) to sell your car. If you have lost it, you can apply for a replacement from DVLA for £25. Some buyers will not purchase a car without a V5C.
2

Check the MOT

Buyers will check the MOT status and history. If your MOT is due soon, consider getting it done before selling to avoid putting buyers off. You can check your car's MOT status for free using our MOT checker.
3

Check for outstanding finance

If your car has outstanding finance, you cannot legally sell it until the finance is settled. Get a settlement figure from your finance provider. Many online car-buying services will handle the settlement as part of the sale.
4

Gather your service history

A full service history adds value to your car. Collect all receipts, MOT certificates, and any records of repairs or maintenance. Buyers are willing to pay more for a car with a documented history.
5

Remove your private plate

If you have a private registration plate and want to keep it, you must transfer or retain it before selling. You can do this through DVLA. If you sell the car with the plate on, it goes with the vehicle.
6

Tell DVLA you have sold the car

Once the sale is complete, you must notify DVLA by completing the V5C yellow section (or online at GOV.UK). You will receive a refund for any remaining road tax. Failing to notify DVLA means you could be liable for fines or offences committed with the vehicle after the sale.

Selling a Car with Outstanding Finance?

Financed car? Finance settlement handled. Having outstanding finance does not stop you selling. Motorway supports you end-to-end. Around 40% of sellers clear their finance a full year earlier than planned. Process may vary in cases of negative equity.

When your car sells, Motorway uses the sale price to clear your outstanding balance directly with your lender. If the sale price is higher than what you owe, the difference is paid to you. On average, sellers get £1,600 more than part exchange (based on customer survey, April 2026).

You'll need to have your finance agreement details to hand. Motorway will request a settlement figure from your lender on your behalf, with nothing complicated for you to arrange.

Sell Your Car FAQs

Common questions about selling your car online through Motorway.

You can profile your car in as little as 30 minutes and list it within 24 hours. Once listed, bids from verified dealers typically arrive within hours. Most sales complete within a few days, with collection and payment arranged for you.
Yes. When you sell your car, you must inform the DVLA using your V5C logbook. Tear off the yellow section (new keeper supplement) and give it to the dealer, then notify DVLA online at gov.uk or post the green section. DVLA will confirm the change of ownership and cancel your road tax, with any unused full months refunded automatically. Motorway will guide you through this when your sale completes.
Yes. Motorway handles finance settlement end-to-end. They use the sale proceeds to settle the outstanding balance directly with your lender and pay any remaining amount to you. Around 40% of Motorway sellers clear their finance a full year earlier than they planned. You will need to provide your finance agreement details, and Motorway will get a settlement figure on your behalf.
Get a fresh MOT if yours has less than 3 months remaining, gather your full service history, take quality daylight photos from every angle, and clean the car thoroughly before profiling. Be honest about the condition. Motorway verifies this at collection and discrepancies can result in price reductions. Timing can also help: spring and summer tend to be busier for most car types.
It is free to list your car on Motorway. A small fee may be deducted from your total sale price only once you are happy to proceed with a dealer offer.
On average, sellers receive £1,600 more selling through Motorway than through part exchange, based on a customer survey in April 2026. 93% of Motorway sellers received more than their part-exchange quote. Part exchange is convenient, but dealers typically offer well below market value because they need to account for their own margins.
There is no obligation at any stage. If you are not happy with the bids you receive, you can relist at any time or withdraw your car from sale completely. You are never committed to accept an offer, and there are no penalties for declining or relisting.
It is possible but more difficult. Most dealers and online car-buying services require a V5C to verify ownership. If you have lost yours, apply for a replacement from DVLA for £25 before trying to sell. Private buyers are often wary of purchasing a car without one.
Yes, but the finance must be settled before ownership can legally transfer. Contact your finance provider for a settlement figure. If the car is worth more than the settlement, you keep the difference. If it is worth less, you need to cover the shortfall. Many online car-buying services, including Motorway, handle the settlement as part of the sale.
Your car’s value depends on its make, model, age, mileage, condition, service history, and current market demand. Online valuation tools give an estimate, but the most accurate way to find out is to get offers from multiple buyers. Via Motorway, verified dealers compete to buy your car, which often results in a price above standard valuations.
It depends on your priorities. If you want the best price with minimal effort, an online car marketplace where dealers compete for your car typically delivers the highest offers. Part exchange is the quickest option if you are buying a new car. Private sales can achieve a high price but take longer and involve more work. Scrap or salvage is the best route for non-roadworthy vehicles.
You do not need a valid MOT to sell your car, but the buyer needs one to drive it away legally. Having a current MOT makes your car easier to sell and can increase buyer confidence. You can check your MOT status for free using our MOT checker.
Part exchange is convenient if you are buying from a dealer, but you typically receive less than market value. Selling via an online marketplace like Motorway often delivers a higher price because multiple dealers compete for your car. On average, sellers get £1,600 more than part exchange offers.
Yes. Many dealers and specialist buyers purchase damaged, non-running, or accident-damaged vehicles. Online marketplaces like Motorway accept damaged cars, though the number of offers may be lower. For severely damaged vehicles, a scrap or salvage buyer may offer the best route.
The fastest way to sell is via an online car marketplace. Profile your car in around 30 minutes, receive offers from verified dealers, and complete the sale in as little as 24 hours. The dealer collects from your home and payment is typically same-day or next-day.
