Why does car insurance drop at 25?

25 is the last major age-based drop in most drivers' car insurance curve. The average premium falls between 24 and 25, with the 25 to 34 age band paying a national average of £822 per year according to Quotezone data. Three things happen at the same time:

  • Young-driver classification ends. Most UK insurers move drivers out of the young-driver risk band at 25. The extra premium loaded on young drivers no longer applies.
  • More insurers compete. Insurers that may not have quoted drivers under 25 could now offer policies. More options usually means lower prices.
  • Statistical risk plateaus. Accident data flattens from around 25 through the mid-40s. Prices reflect that.

Beyond 25, the biggest changes tend to come from lifestyle, not age. Moving in with a partner, buying a house, or switching to a lower-value car can move the premium as much as another year of age does.

Multi-car policies and moving in with a partner

At 25 to 34 many drivers are moving in with a partner or family member who also drives. A multi-car policy insures two or more vehicles at the same address under one policy, often at a discount compared to two separate policies.

How to know if a multi-car policy is worth it:

  • Both cars are parked at the same address.
  • Both drivers have a clean claim history.
  • Renewal dates line up (or can be aligned at first renewal).
  • Both drivers meet the insurer's minimum age.

Always compare a multi-car quote against two separate single-car quotes. The savings vary by insurer and depend on both drivers' individual risk profiles.

How to get the cheapest car insurance over 25

With eight years of possible no-claims bonus behind you, insurers may compete more actively for over-25 business. These are the most effective ways to keep the premium low.

  1. Compare quotes every renewal. Auto-renewing almost always costs more than switching. Compare quotes →
  2. Protect your NCB. A strong no-claims bonus could be worth up to 60% off the premium. Protecting it against a single claim is usually a small cost for a big protected asset.
  3. Bundle home and car insurance. Buying both from the same insurer could reduce the overall cost.
  4. Consider a multi-car policy. If you live with a partner or family member who also drives, this can be cheaper than separate policies.
  5. Increase your voluntary excess. Increasing your voluntary excess may lower your premium. Choose an amount you could afford to pay if you needed to make a claim.
  6. Keep mileage realistic. If you have started working from home, your annual mileage may be much lower. Update your estimate at renewal.
  7. Pay annually. Monthly payments could add interest to the overall cost.
  8. Check job-related discounts. NHS staff, teachers, and armed forces often qualify for small discounts. Ask when you quote.

Car Insurance Over 25: FAQs

Yes. On average, car insurance premiums fall between 24 and 25, with the 25 to 34 age band paying a national average of £822 per year based on Quotezone data. This is because most UK insurers reclassify drivers out of the young-driver risk category at 25, and drivers can now qualify for policies that had age minimums.
The 25 to 34 age band pays a national average of £822 a year for car insurance. That is roughly 21% less than the 17 to 24 band, based on Quotezone Q2 2026 pricing data. Regional variation still applies: London remains the most expensive at £1,060, and the South West the cheapest at £666.
Two main reasons: statistical accident rates fall sharply from age 25, and insurers who may have previously been less willing to quote younger drivers could now compete for your business. The extra competition may help push prices down.
It often is. Multi-car policies cover several vehicles at the same address under one policy, and most providers set a minimum age of 21 or 25 for eligible drivers. Compare a multi-car quote against separate single-car policies to see which is cheaper for your household.
No. Your insurer knows your date of birth and adjusts the premium at your next renewal, not on your birthday. If you want to take advantage of the price drop sooner, compare quotes at renewal rather than auto-renewing.
Yes, though the saving over standard cover has usually narrowed enough by 25 that most drivers no longer need one. Standard policies are competitive with telematics for most 25 year olds with a clean claim history.
A driver who passed at 17 and drove claim-free would have eight years of NCB by 25. This unlocks the maximum discount most insurers offer, up to 60%.
Not usually. Most insurers move drivers out of the young-driver risk band at 25. Prices no longer include the young-driver premium, which is one of the reasons the average drops noticeably at this age.
