Since 2022, your insurer can't charge you more to renew than it would charge a new customer for the same cover. But that only compares you with your own insurer's prices. Other insurers may still offer you a lower price, so it's always worth checking.
Start comparing as soon as your renewal notice arrives. This is usually a few weeks before your policy ends.
Some comparison site research suggests prices can be lower when you buy around three to four weeks before your renewal date, rather than in the last few days. You can usually set a new policy to start on the day your current one ends.
There isn't one fixed legal 21 day rule. Insurers must send your renewal details in good time before your policy ends, and many send them around three weeks before.
Some people also use 21 days as a guide for when to start comparing quotes. It's a sensible point to check your renewal price against other insurers.
You may also see a 26 day rule mentioned. It's the same idea: some research suggests buying around three to four weeks before your renewal date can be cheaper. It's a guide, not a rule.
Under the FCA's rules, your insurer must tell you:
If you've renewed with the same insurer several times, your renewal notice must also remind you that you may find the same cover at a better price by shopping around.
Many policies do. Your renewal notice will tell you if yours will renew automatically and how to stop it. You can usually turn off automatic renewal at any time.
If you let it renew without checking, you could end up paying more than you need to, or with cover that no longer suits you.
Your renewal date is the end date shown on your policy schedule or certificate of insurance. You can also find it in your insurer's app or online account, or in your renewal notice.
