What Is Temporary Van Insurance?

Temporary van insurance cover is short-term motor insurance that runs from 1 hour to 28 days rather than a full year. Temporary van insurance UK policies work as a standalone contract, so you do not need to touch any existing annual insurance you already hold.

Common reasons UK drivers use temp cover van insurance:

  • Borrowing a van. Family or friend's van for a weekend, a move, or a trip.
  • Moving house. Hiring or borrowing a van for the day to move belongings.
  • Buying a used van. Driving a newly bought van home from a dealer or private seller.
  • Test-driving. Trying a van before you commit to buying it.
  • One-off business jobs. A tradesperson borrowing a colleague's van for a specific job.
  • Covering an annual policy gap. While waiting for a new annual policy to start.

Temporary van insurance works separately from any annual policy on the same vehicle, so it does not affect the annual policyholder's no-claims bonus if you have an accident during the short-term cover period.

Brumble has partnered with Cuvva for temporary van insurance. Cuvva prices short-term van cover via the app and the BRUMBLE5 code saves £5 on a Cuvva policy. For annual van insurance instead, see our van insurance page.

Short Term Van Insurance for Business

Cuvva's temporary van insurance includes Class 1 business use and Carriage of Own Goods cover. This means you can drive your van to and from work, visit other business locations, and carry your own tools, equipment, or stock.

Common short-term business use cases Cuvva can cover:

  • Driving between work locations. Visiting multiple job sites, client premises, or business addresses in the same day.
  • Carrying your own equipment. Tradespeople moving their own tools or materials between jobs.
  • Vehicle replacement. Covering a broken-down or off-road company van for a few days while it is repaired.
  • Business trials. Trying out a leased or purchased van before committing to a longer policy.

Cuvva does not cover hire and reward use, which means you cannot use a Cuvva policy for courier work, food delivery, or transporting other people's goods for payment.

If you need hire and reward cover, see our courier and hire and reward van insurance page.

Day, Weekly and Monthly Van Insurance

Cuvva offers temporary van insurance from 1 hour up to 28 days. You can choose the exact duration you need via the Cuvva app. Pricing depends on factors including your age, driving history, the van, and how long you need cover for.

For cover longer than 28 days, an annual policy that you can cancel early is usually the better route.

Any Driver Temporary Van Insurance

Cuvva temporary van insurance covers named drivers only. Each driver needs their own policy. If you need a van insured for multiple drivers on a short-term basis, you may need to arrange separate Cuvva policies for each person.

For businesses that need any-driver cover across a fleet, an annual policy from a specialist commercial insurer is usually the better route.

Temporary Van Insurance for Young Drivers

Younger drivers may pay more for temporary van insurance, just as they do for annual policies. Factors including age, driving experience, and the van itself all affect the price.

Cuvva offers temporary van cover for eligible drivers. Check the Cuvva app for a quote based on your specific circumstances.

For young car drivers, see our car insurance for 21 year olds guide, which covers the wider under-25 insurance market.

How Much Does Temporary Van Insurance Cost?

The cost of temporary van insurance depends on the driver, the van, and how long you need cover. Rather than quoting average figures that may not reflect your situation, the most accurate way to find out what you would pay is to get a quote via the Cuvva app. Brumble members get a discount with code BRUMBLE5.

Van Hire Excess Insurance

Van hire excess insurance and van rental excess insurance are separate products from temporary van insurance. They apply when you hire a van from a rental company that already includes basic insurance, but where the excess (the amount you would pay in a claim) is high.

Rental companies typically include cover as part of the hire fee, but the excess amount can be high. This means if you have an accident or damage the van, you pay up to the excess amount before the rental company's insurance kicks in.

Van hire excess insurance covers this gap. Two ways to buy it:

  • Direct from the rental company. Convenient but typically the more expensive route.
  • From a standalone excess insurance provider. May cover a single day, or an annual policy covering multiple hires. Often cheaper than the rental company's add-on.

If you hire vans more than a couple of times a year, an annual excess insurance policy typically pays for itself. If you only hire occasionally, day cover from an independent provider is usually cheaper than the rental firm's add-on.

Van hire excess insurance is different from full temporary van insurance. If you own the van, or you are borrowing one from a friend rather than a rental company, you need temporary van insurance instead.

For short one-off needs (a day, a week, or a month), temporary van insurance is typically cheaper than taking out and cancelling an annual policy. For regular use of the same van, an annual policy usually works out cheaper on a per-day basis than repeated short-term cover.
